Since the end of January, the bombardment of life-altering news has only intensified. As we try to grasp the impact of one new government act or resolution on our communities, we’re already forced to digest the next.
In today’s climate, many significant policy changes slip past us unnoticed. After all, life in a stable country is already complicated—juggling roles as parents, workers, students, and more—without the added burden of constantly analyzing the political and social landscape. Yet, the cost of inattention could be steep.
The vow to strike down the Basel Accords, and the sudden arrival of the Melania coin are just a few examples that slipped past me—and, I suspect, many of you as well. In trying to retrace the pace and shifting focus of these events, I can’t help but wonder: Is this an orchestrated effort to misdirect us, or simply the present style of governing? Are we being distracted from the important, or is this just what happens when people want everything to happen at once?
